Manningham is a local government area in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The area was named after a mayor of Doncaster, Charles Manning. The Manningham region has a rich history that dates back to the early days of settlement in Victoria.

The Wurundjeri people were the original inhabitants of the land that is now Manningham. They lived in the region for thousands of years, hunting and gathering food from the forests and rivers. The Wurundjeri people had a strong connection to the land and their culture is still celebrated and remembered in the Manningham area today.

The first Europeans to settle in the Manningham area were pastoralists who established sheep and cattle stations in the mid-1800s. The main route into the area was the Bulleen Road which followed the Yarra River from Melbourne. The Bulleen Road became a busy route for the transport of goods and people between Melbourne and the goldfields of northern Victoria.

Doncaster, which is now a major suburb of Manningham, was established in the mid-1800s as a small settlement for the employees of the nearby Warrandyte goldfields. The town grew slowly and by the end of the 19th century, it had become a popular holiday destination for Melburnians looking to escape the city.

The Manningham area remained primarily rural until after World War II when the Australian government launched a program to build new suburbs to cater for the growing population. The Manningham area was targeted for residential development due to its proximity to Melbourne and the Yarra River.

The first suburbs to be developed in Manningham were Bulleen, Templestowe and Doncaster in the 1950s. Over the next few decades, new suburbs were added to the area including Box Hill North, Blackburn North, Donvale and Park Orchards. Today, Manningham has a population of over 120,000 people and is home to a diverse range of cultures and communities.

The Manningham region has a rich cultural heritage that is celebrated in many ways. The Manningham Historical Society was established in 1969 to preserve and promote the history of the area. The society runs regular events and activities including walking tours, talks and exhibitions that showcase the history of Manningham.

Manningham is also home to many historic buildings and landmarks including the Doncaster Hill Precinct which includes several notable buildings such as the 19th century Doncaster Hotel and the Tudor-style Manningham House. The area is also home to several historic churches including the St Clement of Rome Anglican Church in Bulleen and the St Kevin's Catholic Church in Templestowe.

In conclusion, the Manningham region of Victoria, Australia has a fascinating history that spans thousands of years. From the traditional owners of the land, the Wurundjeri people, to the early European settlers, the history of the region is a rich tapestry of cultures and communities. Today, Manningham is a vibrant and diverse area that continues to grow and evolve while still celebrating and preserving its past.
